How to End a Love Letter: Closing Lines and Sign-Offs

Crush on You · · 6 min read

To end a love letter, do three small things. Come back to the one feeling the letter is about and say it plainly. Add a line about what comes next, even something tiny like “see you Friday.” Then sign off with the word you’d say out loud, followed by your name or the nickname they call you. That’s it. The ending doesn’t need to be the most beautiful line in the letter. It needs to be the most honest one.

Below are closing lines and sign-offs you can borrow, sorted by who you’re writing to.

Why is the ending so hard to write?

You’ve said the big thing. You’ve told the story about the rainy bus stop. And now there’s a blank space under all of it, and every option feels either too much (“Forever and eternally yours”) or too little (“ok bye”).

What happens next is the classic mistake: you add three more paragraphs because stopping feels rude. The letter gets longer, the feeling gets thinner, and the last thing they read is a sentence you didn’t mean. Since they’ll remember the ending best, give it thirty seconds of thought.

The three parts of a good ending

A love letter ending usually has three pieces, in this order:

  1. The last line. One or two sentences that sum up the feeling. Not a new idea, not a new story. The thing you’d want them to repeat to a friend.
  2. The sign-off. The word or short phrase before your name: “Love,” “Yours,” “Always,” “xx.”
  3. Your name. Or the nickname only they use. Or, if it’s a secret admirer letter, nothing at all.

If you already wrote the middle with the help of our guide on how to write a love letter, the ending is just the knot at the end of the ribbon.

Closing lines for a crush

With a crush, the job of the ending is to lower the pressure. They may be surprised, and they may need time. Your last line should make it easy for them to answer however they want.

I’m not asking for anything. I just wanted you to know.

No pressure to reply right away. I’d rather say it than keep wondering.

Whatever you think about this, I’m glad I know you.

If you ever want to grab that coffee we keep talking about, I’m in.

Skip “please don’t hate me” or “I’m sorry for this.” Apologizing for your feelings in the last line makes the whole letter sound like a mistake. More ideas for the whole letter are in our letter to your crush guide.

Closing lines for a boyfriend or girlfriend

For a partner, the ending can look forward. Mention something ahead of you two, even something silly. It turns the letter from a memory into a plan.

I can’t wait for every boring Sunday we haven’t had yet.

Thank you for being my favorite person to do nothing with.

Same time next year? And the year after that?

Come home soon. The couch is too big without you.

Closing lines for a long-distance letter

When you’re far apart, the ending is where the distance hurts most, so give it a countdown or a ritual.

23 days. I’m counting, and so is my calendar.

Look at the moon tonight. I’ll be looking at the same one, a few hours later.

Until the airport hug. You know the one.

Our long-distance love letter guide has more on what to say when you can’t say it in person.

How should you sign a love letter?

Pick the sign-off you’d say to their face. Here’s a quick guide by tone:

Tone Sign-offs Works best for
Warm and simple Love, / All my love, / With love, Partners, close crushes
Steady and serious Yours, / Always, / Always yours, Anniversaries, long relationships
Playful xx / Your favorite human, / Your coffee buddy, Early dating, crushes who like jokes
Shy Thinking of you, / Take care, / See you soon, A first confession, a crush you don’t know well
Mysterious Your secret admirer / Someone who notices Anonymous letters

After the sign-off, write the name they know you by. If they call you “Bea,” sign “Bea,” not “Beatriz.” If you’re writing anonymously, the secret admirer letter guide covers how to sign without giving yourself away too soon.

What should you avoid in the last lines?

  • A brand-new topic. If the last paragraph starts with “Oh, and also,” move it up or cut it.
  • Heavy promises. “I’ll love you until the stars burn out” is lovely in a song. In your own handwriting it can feel like a lot, especially to a crush.
  • Asking for an answer by a deadline. “Tell me by Friday” turns a letter into a test.
  • A P.S. that’s bigger than the letter. A P.S. works for a small joke or a sweet extra (“P.S. I still have the ticket from our first movie”). It doesn’t work for the actual confession.
  • Ending on an apology. Say sorry in the middle if you need to, then end on the feeling.

How do you end a love letter when you want an answer?

Ask a light question they can answer in one line, like “Want to get dinner Saturday?” Keep it a real question, not a demand. If you’re sending the letter as a link, a digital love letter can also carry the answer for you.

That’s how our letter builder works. You write the letter, pick a design, and send it as a private link by text, WhatsApp, DM or email. With Letter+, your letter ends with reply buttons (Yes, Maybe, Let’s talk, No), and you get an email the moment they answer. So your last line can stay gentle, because the question is already there for them.

Short love letter endings you can copy

When you just need a line and you’re out of words:

  • “That’s all. I love you, that’s all.”
  • “Thank you for being you. It’s my favorite thing about my life right now.”
  • “I’d choose you again. I’d choose you every time.”
  • “You make the ordinary days feel like something.”
  • “I like you. There, I said it.”

Change one word so it sounds like you. A copied line with one personal detail (“I’d choose you again, even on the day you ate my fries”) always beats a perfect line that sounds like a card.

FAQ

What is the best way to end a love letter?

Say the main feeling one more time, in plain words, and add one small thing about the future. Then sign off with a word you’d say out loud, like “Love,” and your name or nickname.

What do you write before your name in a love letter?

A sign-off like “Love,” “Yours,” “Always,” “All my love,” or “xx.” Pick one that matches how you talk. If you’d never say “eternally yours” in person, don’t write it.

How do you end a love letter to your crush?

Keep it light and take the pressure off: “No need to answer right away, I just wanted you to know.” Sign with your name and a simple word like “See you soon” or “Take care.”

Should you add a P.S. to a love letter?

You can, if it’s small: a joke, a memory, a song you want them to hear. Keep the big feeling in the letter itself, not in the P.S.
