How to Write a Love Letter: Steps, Template and Examples

Crush on You · · 8 min read

To write a love letter, start with one specific memory and say plainly what you feel and why. Add something you’re looking forward to with them, then close with a warm sign-off. Write it like you talk, then cut anything that sounds like a greeting card. A love letter doesn’t need to be long. It needs to be true, and it needs at least one detail only the two of you would recognize.

People freeze at the blank page because they think a love letter has to be poetry. It doesn’t. The letters worth keeping in a shoebox for twenty years tend to be the plain ones: “I still think about the night we got lost looking for that pizza place.”

What is a love letter?

A love letter is a letter written to tell someone how you feel about them: a partner, a husband or wife, or a crush who doesn’t know yet. It can be romantic, funny or quiet. What separates it from a text is that you took time over it, and that it’s meant to be kept and reread.

What should a love letter include?

Most good love letters follow the same loose shape. You don’t have to stick to it, but it helps when you’re staring at an empty screen.

Part What to write Length
Opening Their name, or the nickname you actually use One line
A memory One moment, described with a small detail A short paragraph
The feeling What you feel and what about them causes it A paragraph
Looking ahead Something you want to do with them, big or tiny A few sentences
Sign-off A closing that sounds like you One line

That’s it. Five pieces, and two of them are one line each.

A love letter template you can fill in

If the blank page still wins, copy this love letter template and replace every bracket with your own words. Then read it back and cut anything that doesn’t sound like you.

[Name or nickname],

I keep thinking about [one moment: where you were, what happened, one small detail]. That’s when I realized [what you felt or understood about them].

I love [one thing about them] because [what it does for you]. I also love [something small and specific that only you would notice].

Most of all, I’m looking forward to [something ahead, big or tiny].

[Your sign-off],
[Your name]

The template is a starting point, not the letter. The more brackets you fill with real details, the less it reads like a template.

How to write a love letter, step by step

1. Brainstorm before you write

Grab your notes app and list ten things about them, fast, without judging. The way they hum when they cook. The time they drove forty minutes to bring you soup. Their awful taste in action movies. You’ll only use two or three, but the list does the heavy lifting.

2. Open with a moment, not a summary

“You mean so much to me” is a summary. A moment is “Remember the bus stop in the rain, when you gave me your hoodie and then complained about being cold for an hour?” Moments pull the reader back into a scene. Summaries just tell them a conclusion.

3. Say the feeling and the reason

This is the heart of the letter. Name the feeling, then explain where it comes from. “I love how safe I feel around you” gets stronger when you add “because you never make me feel silly for worrying about stuff.”

4. Look forward

Mention something ahead: the trip you keep planning, the next Sunday morning, growing old and arguing over the thermostat. It turns the letter from a memory into a promise, and it doesn’t have to be serious.

5. Sign off like yourself

“Love,” “Yours,” “Always,” or just your name with a silly drawing. Pick what you’d say out loud. If you’d never say “eternally yours” to their face, don’t write it.

6. Read it out loud once

You’ll catch the sentences that sound stiff. Rewrite those in the words you’d use on a phone call.

Love letter examples you can adapt

Swap in your own details. A letter built on someone else’s memories won’t sound like you, and they’ll notice.

For a partner

Sam,

I was thinking about last March, when the power went out and we ate cereal by candlelight and you told me the entire plot of a book you hadn’t finished. That’s when I knew this was different. I love how you make ordinary nights feel like something I want to remember. I can’t wait for our trip in the spring, even though you’ll overpack again.

Always yours,
Jo

For a crush (lighter)

Hi Ana,

This is a little nerve-wracking to write, so I’ll keep it simple. I like you. I like how you laugh at your own jokes before you finish them, and how you always know a song for every mood. I’d love to take you to that bookstore café you mentioned. No pressure at all. I just wanted you to know.

Leo

Short and sweet

I don’t say it enough, so here it is in writing: you make my life softer and funnier. Thank you for choosing me every day. Love, M.

Romantic

I’ve tried to write this a few times and every draft came back to the same place: the kitchen at 1am, you in my old sweater, laughing at something I can’t even remember now. I love you in a way that still surprises me. I want every ordinary Tuesday with you, for as long as you’ll have me.

Yours,
Chris

How do you write a short love letter?

A short love letter keeps only two parts of the shape: one detail and one feeling. Three or four sentences is enough. Write the detail first (“You left a note in my coat pocket last week”), then the feeling (“I’ve been carrying it around like a good luck charm”), then sign it. Short letters work well tucked into a lunch bag, a book or a suitcase before a trip.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Copying a famous quote as the main point. A quote can open a letter, but if it’s the best line in it, the letter becomes about the quote.

Writing an apology disguised as a love letter. If you need to apologize, do it in its own conversation. Mixing the two muddies both.

Making it about what they owe you. “I hope you’ll finally realize…” puts weight on them. A love letter is a gift, and a gift has no conditions.

Going too long. One or two pages is plenty. Three good paragraphs beat ten average ones.

Overediting. A small awkward sentence can be charming. It proves a person wrote it.

How do you make a love letter feel special?

Once the words are done, how you make the love letter is the last step. On paper, use a pen you like, write it out by hand even if you drafted it on your phone, and fold it into an envelope with their name on the front. A pressed flower, a ticket stub or a photo inside goes a long way.

Should it be handwritten or digital?

Handwriting has a special feel. Your messy letters, the crossed-out word, the paper itself. If you live near each other and they like keepsakes, go for it.

Digital letters have their own strengths. You can tuck photos inside and send it across the world in a second. If you want something between a text and a paper letter, you can write a letter here and send it as a private link they open by tapping an envelope. There’s more on that format, and on choosing a love letter website, in the digital love letter post.

FAQ

How long should a love letter be?

Somewhere between a short paragraph and two pages. Length matters less than detail. One specific memory and an honest feeling will carry the letter.

How do you start a love letter?

Start with their name or nickname, then go straight into a specific memory or the thing you’ve been wanting to say. Skip the throat-clearing like “I’ve been meaning to write this for a while.”

What do you write in a love letter to your crush?

Keep it lighter than a letter to a partner. Say one or two things you like about them, say you like them, and leave room for them to answer however they want, with no pressure.

Should a love letter be handwritten?

It doesn’t have to be. Handwritten letters feel personal and make good keepsakes. Digital letters can carry photos and a song and reach someone far away right away. Pick the one they’d enjoy most.
