Anniversary Letter to Boyfriend: How to Write One + Examples

Crush on You · · 6 min read

An anniversary letter to your boyfriend works best when it names one specific memory, tells him what you love about him now and ends with something you’re looking forward to together. Here’s a short one you can adapt:

Happy anniversary. I still think about our first date, when you got us lost looking for that taco place and refused to use your phone. A year later you still won’t ask for directions, and I still love being lost with you. Thank you for the coffee you leave on my desk, for listening when I ramble, for making ordinary Tuesdays fun. I can’t wait for the next year. Love you, always.

Keep it in your own voice, use real details instead of big words, and aim for one page. Below is a simple structure and more sample letters for different milestones.

How do you start an anniversary letter to your boyfriend?

Most anniversary letters open with “Happy anniversary to the love of my life.” That’s sweet, but he’s read that line on a hundred cards. Open with something only the two of you know.

I keep thinking about the night your car broke down on the way back from the lake. We sat on the hood eating gas station crackers until the tow truck came. I remember thinking: I could do anything with this person, even this.

A memory pulls him into the letter straight away. It doesn’t need to be a big event. Small moments are usually better, because they show you were paying attention.

Grab a pen and jot down five or six moments before you write. The first date, the first fight you got through, the time he took care of you when you were sick, a trip, a joke that never gets old. Pick one or two. You won’t use them all, and that’s fine.

Tell him what you love about him now

Couples often write about the beginning and forget the present. But hearing what you love about him today, after time has passed, is the part that tends to land hardest.

Be specific. “You’re so kind” is nice. This is better:

You still text me when you get home, even after a long shift. You remember how I take my tea. When my mom was in the hospital, you drove four hours without me asking and just sat in the waiting room with a book.

Think about how he’s changed, too. Maybe he’s more patient than when you met, or he’s learned to cook your favorite dish. Noticing his growth is a quiet kind of compliment.

Should you mention the hard parts?

If your year included a rough patch or months of long distance, you can mention it. You don’t have to. But a line acknowledging the hard stuff makes the sweet stuff more believable.

This year wasn’t easy. Between the new job and the months apart, there were weeks I felt like we were just surviving. And we did. I’m proud of us for that.

Keep it to a sentence or two. An anniversary letter is not the place to reopen an argument.

If you two were apart for a while, our guide on writing a long distance love letter has more ideas for that part.

Look ahead

End by looking forward. It doesn’t have to be a proposal or a five-year plan. Small, real plans feel warmer:

I can’t wait to finally take that trip to the coast. And to keep arguing about whether pineapple belongs on pizza for the next fifty years.

Then sign off in a way that sounds like you. “Love you, always.” “Yours.” Or the nickname only you use.

Sample anniversary letters to your boyfriend

Use these as a starting point. Swap in your own details, because those are what make it his letter. The focus shifts a little with each milestone:

Milestone What to focus on
A few months Light and sweet: what surprised you about him so far
1 year The first date, the moment you knew, what this year taught you
2 to 3 years Real life together: routines, a hard stretch you got through
5 years and up How you’ve both grown, and the life you’re building

One year anniversary letter

Happy one year. I still remember being so nervous before our first date that I changed shirts three times. You showed up ten minutes late with a sunflower because the shop was out of roses. You looked so embarrassed about it that I fell for you a little right there.

This year you taught me how to make your grandma’s soup, sat through every one of my shows, and let me cry about a movie without making fun of me. I love how you laugh with your whole face. I love that you text “home safe” every single time.

Here’s to year two. I’m bringing the sunflowers this time.

Two year anniversary letter

Two years. We’ve had two apartments, one dramatic plant that sulks if we forget it, and a lot of late night talks on the kitchen floor. You’ve seen me at my most stressed and you stayed calm for both of us.

I love who you are now even more than who I met. You’re braver about saying what you feel. You call your dad more. You’ve become my favorite person to do nothing with.

I’m so glad it’s you. Let’s keep going.

Five year anniversary letter

Five years ago I had no idea the guy who argued with me about the best Star Wars movie at a party would become my home. We’ve grown up together. New jobs, a move across the country, losing your grandpa, finding our people in a new city.

Through all of it, you’ve been steady. You make me feel safe enough to try new things and fail at them. I don’t say it enough: thank you for choosing me, over and over.

I want the next five years, and the five after that. Happy anniversary, love.

Tips for the format

  • Handwrite it if you can. Your handwriting is part of the gift. Tuck it into the book he’s reading.
  • Or make it digital. If you’re apart or want to add photos and your song, you can send it online. A plain email works. So does our letter builder, which lets you add photos and a song link (on the paid plans) and send it as a private link he opens like an envelope. It’s our own tool, so we’re biased; a plain email with the same words will mean just as much.
  • Read it out loud before you send it. If a line feels stiff, rewrite it the way you’d say it to him.

FAQ

How long should an anniversary letter to my boyfriend be?

One page is usually plenty, around 150 to 400 words. Long enough to include a memory, what you love about him and something to look forward to, short enough that every line counts.

What if I’m not good at writing?

You don’t need to be. Write the way you talk to him and use real details. A short, honest letter with one true memory means more than a long poetic one.

Should I write a letter for a monthly anniversary?

You can, but keep it light. A few sweet lines or a short note works well for months. Save the longer letter for the yearly milestones.

Should I give the letter with a gift?

You can, but the letter can be the gift on its own. If you pair them, let one point to the other: a letter that mentions the trip you booked, or a photo from the memory you wrote about.
